Germs that can make people and animals sick are found on surfaces everywhere – food preparation areas, restaurant tables & chairs, kitchens, countertops, restroom toilets & lavatories, showers, locker rooms, door knobs, telephones, walls, children’s toys, the human body, to name a few. These germs can and do cause illness and sickness if good hygiene practices are not followed.
Cases of norovirus, e coli, listeria, salmonella, rhinovirus, pseudomonas aeruginosa, avarian flu, Staphylococcus aureus (Staph) and specifically the methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are being reported daily. MRSA is an extremely contagious bacteria “superbug” staph infection that is communicated to others via contact with surfaces previously touched by an infected person. Initially, symptoms will mimic the appearance of a spider bite or ingrown hair follicle. This contact area quickly becomes swollen and feels warm to the touch. If it gets into the blood stream it will rapidly spread and could be fatal within days. A recent report indicated that of approximately 100,000 people hospitalized for treatment of this infection, 20% of these people died!
Environments and shared areas of close contact with other people or animals are locations where the bacteria are doing its damage. Students at schools, patients in hospitals, those in correctional institutions (jails, prisons), nursing homes, daycare centers, work-out gyms, medical first responders, clinics, military, professional athletes (NFL, NHL players, etc.), visitors to zoos, veterinarian clinics, travelers on airplanes, buses, trains, rental cars are individuals who daily fall ill after acquiring this deadly bacteria.
